The word dysplasia is derived from the Greek language and denotes a malformation. Dysplasia leads to an abnormal development of the hip joint. Almost all breeds of dogs can be affected; however the most common are the retrievers and the German shepherd breeds. This disease process can be devastating during the developmental period in the puppies life and lead to debilitating arthritis in the later stages of life.

Disabling conditions of the hip joint are commonly seen in our canine patients. A variety of conditions exist that produce or lead to severe pain and muscle mass loss of the rear limb. Hip dysplasia, coxofemoral luxation, capital physeal fracture (Salter I-V types), femoral neck fracture, pelvic and acetabular fractures, and avascular necrosis of the femoral head and neck (Legg-Calve-Perthes disease).

Jungle Island Recognizes MVS

On Wednesday, November 14, representatives from Jungle Island thanked the staff at MVS for all of their hard work in saving Peanut, the beloved orangutan who was suffering from cancer.

Jungle Island presented a one-of-a-kind painting by Noel Kassewitz, commissioned by Jungle Island to express their gratitude to MVS for the life-saving surgery they performed on Peanut.
