Hurricane season is here and it’s expected to be more active than usual. According to CBS News, citing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), there’s a 60% chance of an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season this year. Forecasters predict 13 to 19 named storms, 6 to 10 hurricanes, and 3 to 5 major hurricanes.
As South Florida braces for another intense storm season, it’s essential to have a plan that includes every family member, especially your pets. At Miami Veterinary Specialists, we’re here to help you stay ready, informed, and calm in the face of an emergency.
To help you prepare, we’ve created a free Pet Hurricane Preparedness Checklist with everything your pet may need before, during, and after a storm.
Pet Go-Bag Essentials:
Know Where to Go:
Identify pet-friendly shelters, hotels, or boarding facilities well in advance. Not all evacuation centers accept pets.
Keep Copies of Medical Records:
Include recent exam notes, vaccination proof, and prescriptions in a waterproof folder or digital copy.
Download the full checklist here to make sure you’re fully covered.
Keep Pets Indoors:
Confine them to a safe, secure area away from windows and doors.
Use Their Carrier or Crate:
Pets may panic during strong winds or noise. Crates offer comfort and safety.
Monitor Behavior:
Stress may cause changes in eating, bathroom habits, or hiding. Offer reassurance and stay close.
Avoid Floodwater and Debris:
Sharp objects, contaminated water, and displaced wildlife can all pose risks to pets.
Check for Injuries or Illness:
If your pet shows signs of distress, trauma, or illness after the storm, contact your veterinarian or call MVS.
Reintroduce Routines Gradually:
Pets thrive on routine—return to normal feeding and walking times as soon as it’s safe.
Miami Veterinary Specialists remains open 24/7 for emergency care—including during hurricane events when conditions allow. Our Emergency and Critical Care team is always ready to provide expert support when your pet needs it most.
Stay prepared. Stay safe. And remember—MVS is always here when you need us.
