Paws Off the Pavement: Protecting Your Pet from Hot Surfaces

As summer approaches, the South Florida heat is already beginning to rise and while we may be used to it, our pets’ paws are not. At Miami Veterinary Specialists, we want to remind pet owners of the dangers hot pavement poses to dogs and cats, especially during walks or outdoor play.

How Hot is Too Hot?

When it’s over 85°F outside, surfaces like pavement and asphalt can quickly reach dangerous temperatures:

• Pavement: 130°F–155°
• Concrete: 105°F and up
• Asphalt: 130°F and up

That’s hot enough to cause paw pad burns in under a minute.

Try the 10-Second Rule
Not sure if the ground is safe for your pet? Place the back of your hand or your bare foot on the pavement for 10 seconds.
If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet.

Warning Signs of Burned Paws
After a walk, check for:

• Limping or discomfort while walking
• Licking or chewing paws
• Red, blistered, or peeling paw pads
• Refusal to walk

If you notice any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care right away.

How to Keep Your Pet Safe

• Walk early in the morning or after sunset
• Stick to grass or shaded paths
• Use paw-protecting booties
• Avoid blacktop, artificial turf, or hot surfaces

When to Get Emergency Help

Severe paw burns or signs of heatstroke should never wait. If your pet shows any signs of injury or overheating, head straight to a veterinary ER.
