MDC Veterinary Technology Program

Miami Veterinary Specialists serves as clinical site for MDC Vet Tech Students
The Miami Dade College Veterinary Technology Program offers an ideal educational experience to the aspiring vet techs of South Florida. Being one of only four fully-accredited programs by the American Veterinary Medical Association in the state, the program’s six-semester course of study was built to “provide the stimulation, encouragement, and counseling conducive to an excellent learning environment for a progressive education in Veterinary Technology”. This includes a demanding full-time, 40 hours a week commitment, and 400 hours of hands-on clinical exposure. The grueling program proves to be challenging, but breeds only the best veterinary technicians, maintaining a student pass rate of 100 percent on national and state certification exams.
Miami Veterinary Specialists has been involved with the MDC Veterinary Technology Program for many years, serving as clinical facility for student interns. Using a checklist, the students have a skill set that they must attain in order to successfully move forward in the program. This skills checklist must be verified by either a veterinarian or certified veterinarian technician at MVS. In addition to the checklist, the interns are expected to leap in and take action at the hospital, and are responsible for logging their experiences at the hospital in a learning journal.
The students pictured here are observing a spay procedure on a puppy. Mimi and Karina, two of MVS’s Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT) are assisting Dr. George Larin, Veterinary Technology professor at MDC, and the students with the procedure. Both CVT’s are graduates from the Veterinary Technology Program.
Many times, MVS hires the MDC graduates who have interned at the hospital. When hiring from the program, Miami Veterinary Specialists looks for graduates who work well in a fast-paced environment, are eager to continue learning, and remain enthusiastic about the veterinary technology field. Currently, eight of the veterinary technicians at MVS were hired directly from the Miami Dade College Veterinary Technology Program. We are glad to be part of this learning experience and look forward to continue our relationship with MDC and their Veterinary Technology Program.
