Pneumonia in Dogs

Meet little Dinosaur, a 10-week old Beagle. He was presented to Miami Veterinary Specialists because he had been coughing for a week, had a decreased appetite, was drinking less water and becoming very lethargic.

Before coming to MVS, Dinosaur was hospitalized due to other health complications like depression, nasal discharge, congested lungs and conjunctivitis.

Dolly is a 5-year old Shih Tzu Mix. She was presented to Miami Veterinary Specialists for an evaluation of her right ear due to chronic ear infections (otitis). Her primary care veterinarian referred Dolly for a TECA-BO procedure or Total Ear Canal Ablation and Bulla Osteotomy on her right ear. A year ago, Dolly had a TECA performed on her left ear at another practice.

Meet Colin, a 2-year old Russian Blue cat. He presented to Miami Veterinary Specialists with his first urethral obstruction. Urethral obstructions are easily developed in male cats. It occurs when the lower urinary tract gets obstructed by mucus, crystals or urinary stones. They are life threatening emergencies and could lead to fatalities if they are not treated in time.

Radiographs taken at his primary care veterinarian were telling of intestine foreign body. They clearly showed that he had dilated intestinal loops and a suspicious foreign material in the small intestines.

According to his owners, the scratching had worsened and they finally brought him in when he became lethargic. Also, he had not been hearing very well and he has a history of skin allergies that had improved with a hypoallergenic diet.

Max, a 4-month old Boston Terrier, was presented to Miami Veterinary Specialists during ER hours for hind leg lameness. According to his owners, Max started limping on his left hind limb after falling off from the bed.

He was seen by Dr. Christopher Potanas, one of our veterinary surgeons. Max’s radiographs were taken and they confirmed a left tibial fracture.

Meet Sebastian, an 8-month old Chihuahua mix. He was referred to Miami Veterinary Specialists for a consultation with one of our Specialists. He was diagnosed with an extra-hepatic portosystemic shunt or EHPSS (liver shunt) by his primary care veterinarian based on his blood work (elevated liver enzymes and elevated bile acids).

A liver shunt is a blood vessel that carries blood around the liver instead of through it.
