Clavamox is a veterinary drug used to treat a range of bacterial infections in household pets. As part of a Paw Nation series providing background about the medical problems your pet may suffer, we spoke to Dr. Ivan A. Perez, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Miami Veterinary Specialists in Miami, to get some insights about the drug. You should always consult your veterinarian before giving medicine or supplements to your pet.
What is Clavamox?
Clavamox is a broad spectrum antibiotic, usually given by tablet. It contains amoxicillin and is one of the most commonly used antibiotics in veterinary medicine.
Is Clavamox a prescription or over-the-counter drug?
Clavamox is a prescription drug.
What is the most common use of Clavamox?
It’s commonly used to treat skin infections, including wounds, abscesses, and cellulitis. It’s also used to treat many bacterial infections, periodontal diseases such as gingivitis, ear and eye infections, and kidney infections.
What are the main benefits of Clavamox?
Clavamox is very good as a broad spectrum antibiotic that is effective in treating different bacterial infections. We classify bacteria as either Gram-negative or Gram-positive, and Clavamox is very good in treating both of them. But like any antibiotic, it should only be used with a prescription from your vet.
What are the risks associated with Clavamox?
Animals who have a history of allergic reactions to penicillin may be allergic to Clavamox. As with any antibiotic, there is the risk of an allergic reaction. Also, it hasn’t yet been determined how safe it is for pregnant or nursing animals.
Are there concerns about long-term use of Clavamox?
As with other antibiotics, if Clavamox is used too often or too long, bacteria can become resistant to it. If used too long, it simply won’t be as effective. Dr. Ivan A. Perez is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Miami Veterinary Specialists in Miami. He enjoys working with both cats and dogs, although he has a couple cats of his own to take care of.
